Back in Dalbeattie

The RSAC Scottish Rally will be returning to Dalbeattie for 2024.

Following the move to a new base at Jas P Wilson Forest Machines in 2023, the Organising team of the RSAC Scottish Rally was very happy with the facilities offered, with a central location for Scrutineering, Service, and Rally HQ which was very close to one of the stages. With the continued support of Dumfries and Galloway Council for the 27th year running, the Rally will be back in this fantastic venue on Saturday 20 July 2024.

The Rally will visit three stages again this year with two runs each at Dalbeattie, Kinharvie, and Glengap, offering a total of 44 stage miles. The competitors will run with the Two Wheel Drive field at the front running in reverse order, followed by the Four Wheel Drive cars in conventional sequence.
The RSAC Scottish Rally is part of the Asset Alliance Motorsport UK Scottish Rally Championship, as well as the MG3 Rally Challenge, and the Northern Historic Rally Championship. And of course no Scottish Rally is complete without the presence of the UK Armed Forces Rally Team who have been bringing their Land Rovers to the event since 1963.

Jonathan Lord, Clerk of the Course, said: “We are delighted to be returning to Dalbeattie following the warm welcome we received from Iain Wilson and his colleagues at Jas P Wilson Forest Machines last year. The rally relies heavily on the support received from Dumfries and Galloway Council, and it’s a privilege to be one of their seven Signature Events which bring so much to the region.”

Safe spectator access is one of the priorities of the organising team, and they are working hard to ensure safe and easy access to Spectator Areas at two locations in Dalbeattie, and one in Glengap. Please note that there is NO spectator access permitted in Kinharvie.

Spectator access will be permitted for scrutineering on Friday afternoon, and during the course of the event, there will be a large screen bringing live action from the stages to the Service area. Please check the Spectator area of the website closer to the event for more information.
Regulations for the Event are now available to download from https://www.scottishrally.co.uk/Regulations2024

Armstrong survives last stage scare to secure RSAC Scottish Rally victory

Castle Douglas driver Jock Armstrong took the second RSAC Scottish Rally victory of his career on Saturday (22 July 2023) despite putting his Subaru Impreza on its side on the final stage of the event.

Armstrong and co-driver Hannah McKillop endured a rollercoaster of a weekend, heading into the sixth and final Dalbeattie test tied on times with young charger Finlay Retson after a thrilling day-long battle for the coveted victory.

In a nail-biting four-mile decider, it would go down to the wire but Armstrong persevered, claiming victory with last year’s winners Michael Binnie and Claire Mole taking the runner up spot in their Ford Fiesta R5. After a slow start, David Henderson and Chris Lees rounded out the podium in their Fiesta Rally2.

Supported by Dumfries and Galloway Council for the twenty-sixth time, the 77th running of the popular rally saw the event make a new home in Dalbeattie offering the chance for a revised format and stages that have never been used on the event previously. From the rally base at Jas P Wilson Forest Machines, almost ninety crews would face six tests in the Dalbeattie, Kinharvie and Ae forests before the traditional champagne finish celebrations back in Dalbeattie town.

It was Armstrong who was quickest out of the blocks on the opening stage, setting the scratch time four seconds faster than Binnie who was still adapting to R5 machinery. Retson responded on the second test and moved up to second overall in the process, from then on it was a sensational tit-for-tat battle between the two crews, heading into the last stage equal on times.

Armstrong threw caution to the wind in a bid to clinch the win. But the Subaru pilot drifted wide on a left-hand bend, putting the car momentarily on its side in a ditch, with all hopes of a win evaporating.

But Retson and co-driver Paul Beaton suffered drama of their own, failing to emerge from the stage in their Fiesta Rally2, giving a surprised Armstrong the victory, adding to his 2011 tally and maximum points in the KNC Groundworks Scottish Rally Championship.

It would be Duns driver Michael Binnie who benefited from Retson’s departure, taking second place, and giving co-driver Mole an honourable send-off as she tackled her final championship event.

Henderson struggled with a poor tyre choice over the opening loop but hauled his Fiesta from eighth on the first stage, to the final podium spot by the close. John Wink and Neil Shanks tried to pressure Henderson but lost out on third by a slender one second, to take fourth in their Hyundai i20 R5.

That left Stephen Petch and Michael Wilkinson to round out the top five in their Skoda Fabia R5, just five seconds adrift.

Local honours were left to Iain Wilson and Chris Williams who secured sixth in their Fiesta Rally2. Building confidence after a sizeable shunt on the Jim Clark Rally, Wilson also handed over his facility to the rally in Dalbeattie for Rally HQ and service during the weekend. He also took home the Bandeath Trophy for “Star of the Rally”.

The battle to be top two-wheel drive crew went the way of Ford Escort MKII crew John Crawford and Josh Davison who fought off the advances of Stuart Egglestone and Brian Hodgson in their Historic specification example.

The UK Armed Forces Rally Team (UKAFRT) would celebrate their 60th year at the Scottish Rally, with the familiar Land Rovers entertaining the crowds as usual in the forests and top spot went to Danny Hedges and Ben Hall.

Clerk of the Course, Jonathan Lord is thrilled with how the reinvigorated rally has been received.

“It’s always a challenge to move an event of this size to a new home but I am delighted by the feedback we have received after bringing the Scottish Rally to Dalbeattie,” he says.

“We have been welcomed with open arms by the townsfolk and it was fantastic to take the rally into the heart of the town for the re-group and finish celebrations. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Dumfries and Galloway Council for their unrivalled support and Jas P Wilson Forest Machines for the use of their magnificent facilities in Dalbeattie. After a short break, we will once again be starting our preparation for the 2024 edition of the rally”.

Former winners of the event include World Rally Championship legends such as Colin McRae, Ari Vatanen, Hannu Mikkola and Stig Blomqvist although more recently, it has been local ace David Bogie from Dumfries who has signed his name in the history books, winning the event a record-breaking seven times over the years.

RSAC Scottish Rally is on the move as Dalbeattie becomes new host town

The `Granite Town` of South West Scotland, Dalbeattie will become hosts of the RSAC Scottish Rally on 22 July, in an exciting move for the highly regarded motorsport event.

The esteemed rally, which will run for the 77th time this summer, is one of the longest-running motorsport events in the country, steeped in history and backed with a rich heritage throughout the years. And now, the all-gravel stage rally will make the switch to the historical county of Kirkcudbrightshire for 2023, giving a fresh, bold new look to its offering for fans and competitors.

For well over a decade, the rally has based itself in and around Lockerbie on the East side of the A74(M) and utilising traditional stages such as Twiglees and Castle O’Er. But, with the recent sale of the Lorry Park which housed the event and its busy service area, organisers set about looking to find a suitable venue to re-home the rally.

After extensive work behind the scenes, the rally organising committee have secured an exciting new Rally HQ and Service Area location in Dalbeattie, just 20 minutes west of Dumfries. Thanks to forestry and firewood machinery suppliers and engineers JAS P Wilson, the rally will now be based at their impressive facilities, offering the perfect location to reveal a new route for the 2023 event.

In an exciting new era for the RSAC Scottish Rally, competitors will be able to enjoy a breathtaking array of stages, many of which will be used for the first time at the event. Historic forests such as Dalbeattie, Kinharvie and Ae will form the backbone of the rally, offering returning protagonists and eager newcomers the perfect challenge in South West Scotland this July.

Townsfolk in Dalbeattie will not miss out either, as the rally finish celebrations, champagne spray and awards presentation are all set to be held in the town centre after a hard-fought day in the forests, bringing the rally to the heart of the community.

For the twenty-sixth time, the rally will be supported by Dumfries and Galloway Council. It’s understood to be the longest-running partnership between a rally and a local authority anywhere in Britain, with the Council supporting nearly one-third of all the Scottish Rallies run since the first in 1932. It forms one of the Council’s seven ‘signature events`, which cover everything from Burns Suppers to arts festivals and World Championship Ice Hockey each year.

Once again some of the finest drivers in the UK will tackle the Scottish Rally as the KNC Groundworks Scottish Rally Championship and Northern Historic Rally Championship will utilise the event as a qualifying round and Clerk of the Course Jonathan Lord is delighted to reveal the new look for 2023.

Jonathan Lord, Clerk of the Course said, “We are delighted to begin a new chapter in the 91-year history of the Scottish Rally with our move to Dalbeattie. This will allow us to use some stages which haven’t featured for several years. The move to Dalbeattie wouldn’t have been possible without the enthusiastic support of Iain Wilson of Jas P Wilson, whose premises will provide a first class location for scrutineering, service and Rally HQ. We acknowledge the continued support of Dumfries and Galloway, who are backing the rally for the 26th time, and we are pleased to bring the event to a different part of the region and one which has produced many fine drivers and co-drivers.”

Councillor Ian Blake, the Chair of the Council’s Communities Committee said, “The Scottish Rally is sure to thrive and increase its audience by moving to Dalbeattie, a town that loves motorsports. After the difficult years of the pandemic I’m confident this stellar much loved event will go from strength to strength during the remainder of this decade.”

Councillor Jackie McCamon, Vice-Chair of the Council’s Communities Committee said, “The Scottish Rally is one of the Council’s seven grant-supported Signature Events. This means it exemplifies best practice in the events sector and provides great entertainment and a substantial economic boost for Dumfries and Galloway. The Council will continue to invest in our Events Strategy to take forward community and economic regeneration across our beautiful region.”

Former winners of the event include World Rally Championship legends such Colin McRae, Ari Vatanen, Hannu Mikkola and Stig Blomqvist although more recently, it has been local ace David Bogie from Dumfries who has written his name in the history books, winning the event a record-breaking seven times over the years.

More information on the event will be released over the coming months.
